NAV+art / Open Adventure Training Day - Saturday 12th May 2007

'How to Survive the Open24'

At the request of James Thurlow, we are running a special one day training course dedicated to the art of adventure racing, with a particular leaning towards the type of navigation you might need for the Open12 and Open24. The day is aimed primarily at giving Open5 competitors the skills and confidence to complete a 24hr race.

We know you can do it, so come along for the day and we will show you how!

The date has been chosen specifically to fit prior to the Open5 event in Keswick the following day. Saturday night accommodation is include in the package and we can also offer accommodation to anyone wanting some prior to the Open5 event. The cost of an overnight stay is just £10 per person and includes access to the evening seminar programme below.

Syllabus - The course programme includes :

  • Navigation – both micro navigation and macro route choices.
  • Food and Nutrition – theory and practical advice to survive the events!
  • Equipment and Gear Seminar – how to travel light, samples of suitable kit and displays of the latest and best products.
  • Transitions – tips and ‘How to do it’. . as well as ‘How not to do it!’
  • Training, Stretching and Recovery .. and anything else we can cram in for you

You will learn in small groups of equal ability / experience based on a 4:1 ratio maximum. The programme is not intended to be physically demanding; navigation training is generally done at ‘walking pace’, although you will learn about ‘navigating on the run’. We are also assuming you are competing at the Keswick Open5 event the next day, and therefore don’t wish a physically demanding late night finish.

Location

The day will be based at Bampton Village Hall, Haweswater, near Shap in Cumbria. (Grid Reference 516 181) which provides excellent access to the Eastern Lakeland Fells, as well as being close to the M6 motorway. We have run training weekends from this location before at it is typical of the Lakeland navigation experience you will need for Open24. The village hall gives us loads of space to play during the evening, and plenty of space for ‘roughty-toughty’ indoor AR camping.

Get to Bampton

When driving to Bampton from the south, exit M6 junction 39 and proceed north through Shap village (useful Co-op and good chippy!) At the north end of Shap, veer of left and follow signs for Bampton and Haweswater. Stay on this road for four long miles and you will come to Bampton Grange. Go through Bampton Grange, over the bridge, bear right and the Village hall is 700m on your right.

When coming from the north, exit M6 junction 40, and follow signs for A66 EAST, then A6 south for Shap. You will go through traffic lights on a narrow bridge. At the next mini-island go right for Pooley Bridge, then go next left after a mile or so, following signs for Askham and Bampton,

Alternatively, plot the grid reference on you map and start navigating!

NB

  • Programme timings during the evening may change depending upon requirements.
  • We have not included a ‘night nav’ session as we guess it won’t be popular the night before Open5, but one could be arranged if needed.
  • We can’t offer Friday night accommodation as there is a function in the hall, but reckon people will travel a fair distance from home early Saturday morning hence the 10:00 start. ( Travel Lodges at either Penrith or Kendal are an alternative)

Team NAV+ art . . .

The programme has been developed over a period of nine years and provides an excellent learning opportunity. Your NAV+ art course is delivered by an expert tutor team with excellent teaching skills, and real event experience. Every tutor has professional outdoor pursuit tutoring experience, as well as his or her own mountain marathon or adventure race tales to tell.

You will need . . .

You will probably have most of what you need, especially if you have already entered the Open5 or other adventure racing events. Saturday’s Equipment seminar will provide further advice regarding clothing and equipment, so you may wish to delay expensive purchases until after the course. Please bring with you:

  • A sense of Humour and a Spirit of Adventure.
  • General outdoor clothing, including a Waterproof jacket, maybe overtrousers.
  • Several thin thermal layers and a fleece, also long leg wear not just shorts, because bad weather won’t stop play.
  • Rucsac, Running shoes or boots, (Wet feet are inevitable)
  • Water bottle / drinks, Snack food / lunch for the day.
  • Compass – Try and master the basic theories before you come. The ‘Silva’ range is recommended, in particular model numbers ‘Field 7’, or ‘Ranger 3’
  • Map – Ordnance Survey ‘Outdoor Leisure 5 North Eastern Lakes’ is the relevant map. You need to bring your own map. This is so you can mark it and prepare it just as you will for many races. It also means you can study the area before hand and use it to get to Bampton. If you are a total navigation novice it will help you make the most of you day if you read up about map and compass before you arrive.
  • We usually have a few compasses, and maps for sale – email me to confirm.
  • As a source if info, we recommend Sarah Rowell's book 'Off Road Running'. Try www.needlesports.com or www.peteblandsports.co.uk by mail order for this and other equipment.

Also, for Over-Nighting at Bampton…

If you are staying overnight at Bampton you will need a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, pillow, teddy, and any other creature comforts. The village hall has an equipped kitchen, but you may wish to your own camping stove, pan, mug, bowl, etc, as the kitchen tends just to have large pots and pans. It also helps control the washing up mountain. The hall has toilets and wash facilities but no showers ….. just like an Adventure Race!
