NAV+ art –Bampton Village Hall, Haweswater, Lake District
20/21 September 2008

Overview

map reading

NAV+art is a weekend training course dedicated to the art of navigation for mountain marathons and adventure races. Our next course in September is primarily focused at people entering the OMM event in October, but is equally applicable to any adventure racer wanting to further their navigation skills. The programme is designed to give you maximum training and information to help you improve your performance, comfort and ultimate success at the OMM, or similar.

Syllabus . . .

The course programme includes :

  • Navigation – both micro navigation and macro route choices.
  • Food and Nutrition – theory and practical advice to survive events!
  • Equipment and Gear Seminar – how to travel light, samples of suitable kit and displays of the latest and best products.
  • Mountain Marathon craft – tips and ‘How to do it’ . . as well as ‘How not to do it!’
  • Training, Stretching and Recovery . . . and anything we can cram in for you

The programme is not intended to be a physically demanding weekend, but the weekend will be tiring because it is a busy programme and you will learn so much.  Your ‘running’ speed or ability is not relevant, nor is your navigation experience. You will learn in small groups of equal ability and experience. However, this is not a course for complete beginners and some understanding of a map is expected.

Location . . .

out there...The venue is Bampton Village Hall, in the Haweswater Valley. This is located very near Shap and junction 39 of the M6. We have used the venue for many years previously and the area offers ideal pre-OMM training area and appropriate facilities. We have original OMM 2005 maps available for your Sunday training event.

The programme for our September course is a self catering/camping format, which is ideal preparation for the forthcoming OMM. Either way, if you are an experienced OMM or MM competitor you will be well versed in the necessary camping skills, and this is a chance to ‘dry run’ your competition kit. Alternatively, if you are new MM camping you do need to practise this prior the real event.  Full venue details and directions will be sent to you prior to the course.

The programme will use OS 1:25k scale maps to begin with, but copies of 2005 OMM style (1:40k) maps will also be available to you for the later stages of Saturday and Sunday.

Venue

The venue is Bampton Village Hall, in the Haweswater Valley. The area is excellent for our training needs and we have camping space adjacent to the facilities of the Village Hall.

B+B is available in the village also, if you wish it. I suggest The Crown and Mitre at Bampton Grange, or The Mardale Inn in Bampton. (Note – Bampton and Bampton Grange are two separate hamlets less than 1 km apart, with the Village hall set between the two halves)

You will need . . .

map readingYou will probably have most of what you need, especially if you have already entered the OMM or other events. Saturday’s Equipment Seminar will provide further advice regarding clothing and equipment, so you may wish to delay expensive purchases until after the course. As a guide you will need:

  • Sense of humour and a Spirit of adventure.
  • General outdoor clothing, including a Waterproof jacket.
  • Rucsac,
  • Running shoes or boots, a several pairs of socks. (Wet feet are inevitable; many of our tutors recommend wearing boots during the Saturday training day in an attempt to stay dry and warm. Some ‘slower paced travel’ is inevitable)
  • Water bottle / drinks, Snack food for each day.
  • Compass – Try and master the basic theories before you come. The ‘Silva’ range is recommended, in particular model numbers ‘Field 7’, ‘Ranger 3’ or ‘Expedition 4’
  • Map – need to bring your own map so you can refer to it both before and after the weekend. Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure 5 North Eastern Lakes is the relevant map.
  • Whistle and plastic bivi bag.
  • We recommend Sarah Rowell’s book, ‘Off Road Running’.

Try www.needlesports.com or www.peteblandsports.co.uk by mail order for this and other equipment.

We usually have a few compasses to loan or sale, along with sacs, etc.
